Identification
Which issue is it, and which features distinguish the specimen?
Elements of an attribution
Issuer, denomination and inscriptions guide research. Legible dates, signatures and series can distinguish issues or varieties. A catalogue reference should identify the publication and edition consulted, without turning a hypothesis into certainty.
Visible, reported and confirmed
Separate what is visible on the note, what has been reported and what needs research. Record an illegible inscription as such. Identifying an issue does not authenticate the specimen; that conclusion requires an appropriately scoped examination and evidence.
